The fly fishing DVD entitled ‘Successful Fly Fishing Strategies’ covers nine different types of trout fishing waters such as:

This DVD shows how to fish with dry flies, nymphs, streamers or a combination. You will be shown how to attach and use different indicators and how you can setup and fish with two flies at the one time! This fly fishing DVD is different from most – it provides valuable and usable information and still is entertaining.

This is probably the best fly fishing DVD I have seen in a while. If you have ever wondered how that other guy at the bend in the river is hooking and landing all those trout while you are not – this is the fly fishing DVD for you! Whether an expert or beginner, take the time to watch this DVD and learn a few secrets from a couple of blokes that obviously enjoy fishing and know what they are talking about. During my first viewing, I realized that not only was the DVD filled with valuable information, but that it was also professionally produced and just plain fun to watch.

I have seen almost all the fly fishing DVDs and videos produced and this show is, without a doubt, about the best. It is just what its title says — about strategies and how to fish different kinds of water, no matter if that water is located in New England, the west, the south or Alaska. This is not a casting video – as the title says, it’s about strategies. I was impressed with the clear explanations of the kinds of choices a fly fisher can have in a particular location.

I thought this program did an excellent job of teaching those fishing strategies in a live class room. I have spent many days guiding many different rivers over the years and in my mind it can be one of the most difficult rivers to guide on. Watching this program has actually helped me do a better job in helping my clients be more successful fishing this river. I find it helpful to watch as many programs as possible about fly fishing because I am always looking for tips to give me an edge on the water with my clients. This program did that as well as being easy to watch. It was interesting, it was done well and it covered many different fishing situations that most anglers find themselves in on a regular basis.

Most fly reels that you would consider for trout fishing are single action reels. For every turn you make cranking the line in, you get that much line back. Spinner reels in comparison typically have drastically greater ratios than this from 4-6:1, or 4 to 6 revolutions of line per turn of the handle. The retrieval of line from a single action reel is very much dependant on how much line is on the reel at the time. Adding a backing (more on this later) helps maintain the amount of line coming in.

When shopping for a fly reel there are a couple things to look for:

1. The line weight the reel is designed for. For trout fishing, you will typically be using 5, 6 or 7lb line. Luckily, there are many fly reels that are rated for 5-7lb line. Some even have the ability to switch spools easily.

2. Line retrieval system. Obviously, a reel is going to have a manual, aka you, line retrieval system. Some manufacturers have automatic retrieval systems on their fly reels. This means you push a button and the line comes back all by itself. This can be convenient but using this when you are trying to bring in a fish can make you lose some of the feel and could cause you to lose the prize fish that is pushing the weight limit of your setup.

3. Drag. A vast majority of fly reels have non adjustable drags. It will drag the line but without giving you adjustability. If you need more drag, you can apply a bit of pressure to the reel with your hand. There are a few high-end fly reels that offer adjustable drags but they are more common in higher pound rated models.

4. Easily Replaceable Spools. As we go through the section on line, you will see why having multiple spools is an essential component of a good fly fishing rig.

As with a spinner rod, picking a fly rod is a subjective thing. What is important is to make sure that you have an 8 to 9 foot fly rod for fishing for trout. You need the extra length compared to a spinning rod to cast the line properly. You can purchase fly rods that break down into 2 or more pieces. More pieces add a bit of weight but do not affect the flexibility of the rod nor its function. You will want to pick a rod with small enough lengths to fit your application. If you are just going to fish and have the room 2 pieces is plenty. If you want to fly fish while on a backpacking expedition, one that breaks into 5 pieces would be much more practical to carry.

While trying out fly rods, you want to test the action like you would for a spinner rod. If there is room in the store, check the “snap” of the rod as well. Hold the rod vertically and whip it back and forth to make sure the tip of the rod really snaps forward as if you were casting it. This snap is what propels you fly forward and gives you quite a bit of distance control with small input differences.

Baits That Work Well In Almost Every Situation

Prepared Salmon Eggs – Personally, this has always been one of the most reliable ways to catch trout. It is not guaranteed but between the smell and the bright red or orange color, the trout bite almost immediately, especially stocked trout. The wilder trout tend to shy away more but sometimes will still let their curiosity get the better of them. These work well especially in deep pools or if you are fishing a lake head where you are still focused on more river-size trout.

Velveeta Balls — If the fish aren’t biting the salmon eggs, a little ball of Velveeta around the hook can sometimes do the trick. The color is milder than that of the salmon eggs and the cheese stays on the hook well while still giving off an odor.

Engineered or Synthetic Bait – Powerbait as well other brands all work similarly to the above mentioned baits. They are tailored for certain types of trout and are offered in various colors. If you intend on using Powerbait, be sure to pick up an assortment of the colors offered. Rainbow trout, particularly, love Powerbaits but are picky about the color on some days. Water conditions play a factor but are not a guarantee.

When do trout like to eat?

Spinners are often used as lures when trout fishing and lure fishing is my preferred method. However, depending on the conditions bait can be used. Look to crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, worms, salmon eggs, chicken liver, bees, ants, wasps, other fish and flies as bait. You can also use cheese, marshmallows and corn. Power Bait is often used when fishing for rainbow trout but it is not as useful on other species. If you are not having luck with the particular bait you are using, try something else.

Trout are picky eaters. They may like one type of food one day and not the next. This is important to note because you may want to bring several different varieties of bait with you. Pay attention to the type of insects that are flying near the water and match those if you can.

Trout are also rather lazy. They do not want to fight too hard to get food so often target food sources that are in distress. For example, an injured grasshopper is more likely to become prey of trout than one that is perfectly healthy and more likely to get away. This can be used to your advantage by mimicking behavior akin to injured food.

Because trout can see colors, sometimes the color of the bait is important. For live bait, try to match the type of food that is in the area at that stage. For artificial bait, you may have luck with one color and not another. With lures a dull color such as bronze or black work well on sunny days, gold, silver and other shiny colors work well on overcast days. Remember trout do not have eyelids so too much ‘flash’ will scare them away.

Power Bait is synthetic bait that is really useful with rainbow trout. It comes in various colors and you may need to experiment with colors to see what attracts the trout most. Trout of course eat both terrestrial and aquatic foods.
