Optimum Water Conditions

For bait and spinner fishing on rivers, the main things that the angler needs are to be able to see. The water should be clear enough that you can see any potential snagging points and try to avoid them. For spinners, you want water that is 1.25 to 6 feet deep. Any shallower and it is difficult to keep from scraping the bottom and any deeper you will be unable to see the spinner. For bait fishing, these are good recommendations as well but you have more flexibility.

With bait fishing, you generally need a calm spot that you can subtly get your bait slipped into, without losing the bait in the process.

The most important thing to remember is that trout do not like to work. Swimming in rough water is no fun and they will try to avoid it as much as possible. By finding calm spots with protection from currents, you will know where to drop your spinner or bait.
